Direct Primary Care (DPC) is a different approach to primary care. Instead of billing your insurance for each visit, you pay a simple monthly membership fee directly to your doctor's office. This allows us to spend less time dealing with insurance and administrative requirements and more time caring for you. At Meadowlark Family Medicine, our goal is to provide accessible, personal, relationship-based healthcare with transparent pricing and more time with your physician. As a member, you'll have access to Dr. Phoebe Devitt and Dr. Joel Charles for your primary care needs, with longer appointments and the ability to communicate with us directly when questions arise.
Traditional primary care practices often care for thousands of patients and must work within the requirements of insurance companies and large healthcare systems. This can lead to short appointments, long waits, and limited access to your physician.Because Meadowlark Family Medicine will have smaller patient panels, we can get to know our patients and families over time. We believe that understanding your story, your family, and your goals is an important part of providing good healthcare. Our goal is simple: more time, better access, and a stronger relationship with your family physician.
Monthly membership fees are:Children$60/monthAdults 18-49$100/monthAdults 50+$120/monthMax family price$300/monthOne time enrollment fee of $100 per person, max $200 per family.Note a family is two adults and their minor children. HSA's can typically be used to pay for memberships. Labs and supplies/meds for procedures are passed through at near wholesale cost. See pricing page for common lab costs. Additional services may be added over time that have a per-service price, at full price for non-members, and deeply reduced price or free for members.
We accept HSA cards. We have structured our pricing so it complies with eligibility under 2026 rules. That being said, the rules surrounding Health Savings Accounts and Direct Primary Care memberships can be complicated and may change over time. We recommend checking with your tax professional or HSA administrator regarding your individual situation. We will provide any documentation needed for your records when appropriate.
Memberships are typically paid out of pocket or with HSA funds. We do not bill insurance for your care here. However, you can still use your insurance for care you get elsewhere.
Your membership includes comprehensive primary care and may include:• Routine wellness and preventive care• Care for acute illnesses and injuries• Management of chronic medical conditions• Longer, unhurried appointments• Same-day or next-day appointments generally available• Virtual visits when appropriate• Direct communication with your physician for appropriate questions and concerns during clinic hours• Coordination of care with specialists and other healthcare providers• Basic in-office procedures and services when appropriateSome services, including certain laboratory tests, imaging, medications, vaccines, and outside services, may involve additional costs. Whenever possible, we will help you find high-quality, affordable options and will be transparent about those costs.See our services page for a more thorough list of of our offered services.
Yes. DPC replaces primary care, not insurance. Most members pair it with a high-deductible health plan for hospitalization, specialists, major surgeries and emergencies. DPC pairs well with high deductible health plans because they often aren't covering your primary care anyway. The way we think about it is "You want a subscription for things you know you'll use, and insurance for the things you hope you'll never have to." The evidence is clear that primary care helps people be healthy and save money on healthcare, so people shouldn't have to hesitate in using it. But life is unpredictable, and insurance is there for the things you hope you don't need.
You can still use your insurance for care you receive elsewhere while being a member of our direct primary care practice. Your membership with Meadowlark covers your primary care here. It does not prevent you from using your insurance for other care you need. While we try to manage as much of your care as possible, when you need to see a specialist we can make referrals and easily access most notes and test results from other systems.
Yes. Our electronic health record can pull your records from most health systems. You will need to fill out an release of information with your other healthcare providers.
The clinic will be located in downtown Viroqua. We will announce the address in October. The clinic will open for visits March 2027.
Our practice is founded by two family physicians, Dr. Phoebe Devitt and Dr. Joel Charles. We are committed to building a practice where you are known and cared for as a person, not simply as an appointment on the schedule. The DPC model shines in making it easier for you to see your doctor. As a small practice, however, there may also be times when one of us helps care for the other's patients, particularly for urgent needs or when one physician is unavailable. We believe this team-based approach gives our patients both continuity and reliable access to care.
Direct communication with your physician is an important part of the DPC model. We want your care to be convenient for you. Without the need to bill for visits, we can take care of more of your needs without you having to come in.Members will primarily be able to communicate with us through messaging in our electronic medical record app, which will function like texting. Unlikely in traditional systems, these messages will come directly to us. When appropriate for more urgent issues we will be available by phone. We will generally not be able to respond to messages outside clinic hours. While we strive to be accessible, as a family with two physician-parents and young kids, it would not be sustainable for us to provide 24/7 access.
We can often provide guidance and, when medically appropriate, virtual care while you are away from home. However, there may be situations where an in-person evaluation is necessary. If you are experiencing a medical emergency while traveling, you should seek emergency care locally.
Transparency and commitment are important to us. When you join we are committing to get to know your needs and take care of you, which takes time and effort. On enrollment we charge a one time $100 enrollment fee, maximum $200 enrollment fee per family. There is a 3 month minimum for membership.
We welcome individuals and families who are looking for a more personal, accessible relationship with their primary care physician. Our practice will have a limited number of memberships so that we can maintain the time and access that make Direct Primary Care possible. Enrollment may therefore be limited as our practice grows.
